A Dog Named Rocket

I’m often asked where I get my inspiration for my human characters, but no one has ever thought to ask about the canine variety. Every dog I’ve ever had in one of my books (except for These Simple Gifts) has been inspired by a real-life person…uh…dog. The same is true for Rocket in Mayhem and Moonlight.

When I met my husband, he had two golden retrievers—Sky and Max. Sky was about nine months old and seventy-five pounds of crazy. It was clear he didn’t like me horning in on the pack, and he took every opportunity to clip me whenever the four of us went for a run.

Fortunately, I grew on him. Maybe it was because I was the one who groomed him (if one could call it that), trained him, and took him to his vet appointments. He was a bit squirrely and very energetic. I asked the vet tech one day when he’d start calming down. “How old is he?” she asked. “Four,” I replied. Wrinkling her nose, she said, “Give him about eight more years.” Sure enough, he finally settled down around the age of twelve.

He passed away a little over six years ago at the ripe old age of fourteen, but he lives on forever in Rocket, the Giordano family dog. He’s got his paws full keeping watch over three little, rambunctious boys. Sky would’ve loved that job!
