Words

Words. They have the power to do incredible things—uplift, inspire, encourage, teach, preach, soothe. The list is endless. Of course, they have the power to do the opposite of these things, as well, but I want to focus on the positive.

As a writer, words are as necessary as breathing. When put with other words, they can create story. I believe God gave me the gift to write, but He also held back the gift of creativity just enough that writing well is a struggle—one I depend on Him for. But that’s okay, because I’d much rather create with Him than in a vacuum.

And, as a writer, I’m always drawn to how creative others might be. A dear friend of mine shared a book with me by Andrée Seu titled Won’t Let You Go Unless You Bless Me. She’s an incredible writer, and, I must admit, I have to be fully awake and cognizant when I read her work or I get easily lost. But it’s worth the effort.

But a less active way that words move me is through music—most notably worship music. I can be listening with half an ear, and then something in the lyrics will hit me, and gratitude and emotion suddenly fill me. The artists whose words have the most impact on me are MercyMe (Finally Home, Even if, I Can Only Imagine), Casting Crowns (Oh My Soul, Praise You in This Storm) and Natalie Grant (King of the World). But more recently, artist Cory Asbury’s Reckless Love has been playing repeatedly in my head. I wake up in the middle of the night with the lyrics serenading me.

Then a friend suggested I check out a YouTube video of a young couple, Caleb and Kelsey Mashup, who took Asbury’s song and added to it—Death Was Arrested. This is a video you won’t want to miss. They take the power of words, blend it with amazing harmony and take Reckless Love a step beyond. It amazes me how talented so many people are. Of course, I can barely carry a tune in a bucket, so I’m even more impressed. I hope you will be, too. Enjoy!
